DE Policies

1. DE Review of Online/Hybrid Classes - DE shall review all online classes and all hybrid classes (any class which substitutes class time with internet is considered a hybrid class, and must go through the same DE and Curriculum approval process as a fully online class.)

2. DE Course Approval Process

3. Faculty Certification - To teach online faculty must receive training in the CMS approved by the College and which is employed to deliver the online class.  How do I obtain a DL notation on the Seniority List (added 3-29-13)

Recertification of Online Faculty (added 4-16-09)

Every  (5) five years (dating from the original certification of the class by DE) or the date of the faculty online certificate on file with DE, or when the Course Outline of Record expires (every 6 years), whichever occurs first, the class must be reviewed again and re-certified through the DE/Curriculum Shell Review Process, and as part of this process, faculty must participate in an "online pedagogy" training as approved by the DE Committee, and provide a certificate in order to continue teaching the class online.

If a faculty member does not submit a certificate in "online pedagogy" as required above, the onlline faculty cannot be scheduled to teach an online class until and unless they obtain and provide such certificate. The online member can be scheduled by their respective Department Chair  to teach an "on campus class", if available and pursuant to their seniority rights in the respective Department. (DE has approved the @One class - "Introduction to Online Learning and Teaching" - as an approved "online pedagogy class", and @One Class - "Introduction to Teaching with Moodle" - as approved for moodle certification/re-certification).  If the training is with another provider than @One, online Faculty should clear the online pedagogy class they take before they take it to ensure it meets the standards required for this certificate.

4. Accepted Training - Facuty need to get trained in a CMS and provide a certificate of training to the DE Committee. Moodle and Coursecompass/E-College are approved platforms.

5. Change of Course Management System - If the college adopts a new course management system (CMS) which is approved by the DE Committee, EPC, and College Council, faculty need to train in that system, and provide a certificate upon completion to the DE Committee.

The online/hybrid classes which are converted to the new CMS do not have to go through Curriculum/DE approval. However, the converted classes do need to be reviewed and approved by their respective Department Chair/Dean.
(11-28-12)

6. Renewal of Curriculum/DE Approval - Online/hybrid classes must go through a complete new Curriculum/DE approval every six (6) years from the original date of their Curriculum/DE approval. (11-28-12)

7. Renewal of Online Pedagogy Certificate - At the time of renewal of Curriculum/DE approval of online/hybrid classes (every 6 years from date of original approval) - see #6 above, the online faculty must provide a new certificate in online pedagogy.

8. Scheduling of Online Classes - The faculty online course shell must be reviewed and approved by DE/Curriculum - by the 3rd galleys of each semester before it can be scheduled  as an online or hybrid class

9. Late Add policy - Adding Online Students Once Class is Closed - see 11-23-08 revision - http://missiononline.pbwiki.com/late-add

 C. Class Size, Assignments, Load, Mileage Reimbursement and Mentoring
1. a. Article 12, Class Size, applies to D/DL classes. In addition, the first time a D/DL course is offered at a college, or the first time an instructor teaches a D/DL class, the maximum class size shall be 25 students, unless the assigned faculty member permits the class size to reach a maximum of 35. Thereafter D/DL class size shall not exceed 40 students unless the assigned faculty member permits additional students to enroll after the first day. These class size limits (25 for first time or 40) apply to the registration limits so that the number of students permitted to enroll cannot exceed these limits.

11.  Mission Load Limit Policy  (4-16-09)

A full-time faculty member shall teach at least 40% of their regular assignment on campus. All of an adjunct assignment can be taught online. Any deviation from the 40% on campus assignment needs to be approved by the department chair, the dean, and the Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Hybrid classes ( which are at least 51% on campus, and the remainder on the internet) are considered “on campus” classes for purpose of computing the faculty load limit under this policy.  endorsed by EPC on 4-16-09

amended: 5/9/11 - a Hybrid class is one in which under 51% of traditional classroom instructions is replaced with online instruction.  see updated policy at http://lamc-ddl.pbworks.com/w/page/46030652/Glossary-Definitions-Hybrid

12. Mission Absence Policy - http://lamc-ddl.pbworks.com/f/absence.doc

The student evaluation may be used by Department Chairs in their evaluation of faculty teaching online. see link at http://wellness.lattc.edu/online/evals/LAMCeval.html

15. Super Sized Online Classes - added 2-10-10 - DE recommends that "Best Practices" in online classes at Mission dictates that online classes "not exceed" 50 students.

16.  Online or Virtual Office Hours - Under the current AFT contract, the DE Committee and the VPAA agreed that online faculty can fulfill their "Office Hours" requirement through "Virtual Office Hours" and that providing a specific date, time each week, and the method of contact, either through chat, phone, or email is acceptable and fulfills the contractual obligation of online instructors regarding their "Office Hours" .  The Virtual Office Hours should be included both in the instructor's syllabus and also under each faculty member's directory listing and profile for easy access by our online students. added 11-9-07

Historical Policies

1. Suspension of DE/Curriculum Evaluation of new Online Classes - added 3-15-10 - DE along with the VPAA recommend that the DE/Curriculum Evaluation of new Online Classes be suspended pending the submission, implementation, and approval of a Substantive Change Proposal by the LACCD Board of Trustees and Accreditation Commission. This recommendation was reviewed and approved by the Educational Planning Committee in its March 15, 2010 meeting. It is anticipated that the DE/Curriculum Evaluation and Review of new Online Classes will not resume until Fall 2011.  Suspension of DE/Curriculum Review of New Online Classes
