Minutes of 10-13-06
present: Vilma Bernal, David Jordan, Richard Rains, Paul McKenna, Said Pazirandeh
1. Follow up on last meeting details
David talked with Alma Johnson-Hawkins about getting a copy, in advance, of each semester, in the pink and blue galley stage, of the online/hybrid classes to ensure any new online faculty are trained and that the new online classes have gone through curriculum/de content review. Alma said that she would look into it. Follow up on this in two weeks.
No meeting with the Council of Instruction has been set to discuss the DE policies with Dept. Chairs, or their training in the evaluation of online classes. This needs to be followed up.
2. Discuss Evaluation of Online Instructors - evaluation - Richard
Richard is to be commended on his draft of what to look for in the content and process of evaluating online classes and instructors. The Committee reviewed his draft and it will be forwarded to the Academic Senate in its next meeting for informational purposes, along with the Committee Change of Name to the Distance Education Committee. In our next meeting we will review and finalize the "Steps to Teach Online" - see - http://lamc-ddl.pbwiki.com/application - and forward that also to the Academic Senate.
3. Discuss Student Learning Outcomes - slos - Vilma said that the SLO's are being developed in different disciplines and that we should wait to see how that develops to integrate them into DE. A SLO Coordinator is to be hired by the college, and at that point in time we can discuss with that person the integration f SLO's into DE.
4. Discuss new moodle training - http://missionmoodle.pbwiki.com - David told that committee that the District has purchased moodle for each college, and that Hanh Tran has set up our moodle course management system at http://moodle.lamission.edu . Hanh has given the administrative rights to David who can now issue moodle accounts to interested faculty. At this point in time, the DE Committee encourages faculty to get trained in the new etudes ng course management system. A 2nd workshop is starting on 10/23, and Juan Chacon is the trainer. However, if faculty do not want to do a class online or hybrid and just want to put up their syllabus, and class materials then they can use a moodle account. Paul Mckenna recommended, along with the rest of the DE Committee, that the Etudes NG training will continue to require 4 days of 4 hours training each for a total of 16 hours for faculty to receive their online certification to teach and will follow the content evaluation for training established by Vivian Sinou as Director of Etudes Ng - see the 4 day activities required for training in etudes ng at http://missionetudes.pbwiki.com/schedule
5. Discuss student orientation to online/hybrid classes - orientation - Vilma talked with Joe Ramirez and he is very keen on having students receive orientation in online/hybrid classes. Vilma and the Committee agreed that the training should be by a faculty member who is familiar the course management system. The workshops would be an hour or so in length, and at different times and dates at the beginnning of each semester. David and Vilma will work on developing such a class, and will work in promoting the classes for Winter and Spring 2007.
