At our DDL Committee a couple weeks ago we agreed to form a subcommittee to look at the online classes we’re offering at Mission with the idea of seeing where additional classes are needed to have an online degree or certificate. To help move forward on this project I have prepared a couple of spreadsheets. Basically, I recreated the Associate Degree Plan B and IGETC Advising Forms that are in the spring schedule of classes. I then reviewed the winter and spring online course offerings in the schedule and listed the instructors who are in the schedule and the classes they are offering to the right of the distribution requirements. The plans are not degrees or programs, just the distribution requirement or transfer requirements but it seemed to me to be a good place to start. ITV already offers classes in all of these areas but the classes are not totally online, nor does ITV offer a degree.

As expected, Mission is quite strong in online offerings in the Social & Behavioral Sciences area and extremely weak (zero course offerings) online in English, the Natural Sciences and Math. Please review the spread sheets, they are not inclusive for I don’t know all the classes or instructors that have been approved but are not offering online classes at this time. The spreadsheets are intended to give us a point of departure, something to discuss and help guide our efforts to achieve the maximum results for Mission students.

Trade, West and East have extensive online offerings and I’m told Pierce has a goal of having two online degrees in two years; maybe we could discuss how we might encourage faculty in the needed areas to obtain training and help them prepare classes to be offered online. Some areas we might focus on are: English, Anthropology, Astronomy, Economics, Geology or Oceanography. I know many of the faculty in these areas have some experience with distance education and have been may be willing to prepare their classes to offer online.
