Teaching online at Mission College - revision-4-20-07

The steps below provide an overview of the procedures for teaching online at Mission College. Faculty who are interested in teaching online are encouraged to speak with colleagues who are already teaching online to determine if this is something you want to pursue. The pedagogy, learning activities and requirements for teachers and learners is significantly different than those required in a traditional class.

1. Speak with your department chair to determine if an online class in your discipline is in the departments plan.

2. Check with the department head or the Office of Academic Affairs to determine if the class has been approved by the Curriculum Committee for delivery in a distance education format. If the course is not approved for distance education delivery it will have to be reviewed and updated by the Curriculum Committee.

3. Review the AFT Contract, Articles 40 & 41 regarding compensation and intellectual property rights. Questions should be directed to the Mission College AFT Chapter Chair, Gary Prostak.

4. Faculty are required to provide documentation that substantiates completion of training in distance education to the Distance Education Committee prior to teaching in this format. Online training is available. For more information contact the Chairperson of the Distance Education Committee, David Jordan.

5. Course shells are requested through David Jordan.

6. Faculty develop their class in the development shell. The development shell is reviewed by a Distance Education Subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee prior to the course being offered.

7. The course is placed in the schedule of classes.
