Rough Draft of What is a Hybrid Class - minutes 2-09-07

here is what Paul Mckenna has come up with as a "rough draft"

I reviewed my materials regarding blended classes and curriculum. College of the Canyons addressed the issue several years ago and this is what they agreed upon as part of their curriculum process, the statement is from the COC Curriculum Handbook.

Hybrid Class Policy Statement

“For a course which 30% or more of the instructional hours will be delivered in a distance-learning format (online, TV, video, etc.), a Distance Learning Addendum must be completed. The Distance Learning Addendum provides the Curriculum Committee with the information needed to ensure that the quality of the course remains intact via the alternative delivery method. The committee reviews the appropriateness of the methods of presentation, assignments, evaluation of student performance and instructional materials. The committee also reviews the information to determine that appropriate contact between the students and instructor will occur.”

I think the statement is pretty inclusive. It sets the standard at 30%, it requires a review and ensures appropriate methods are included. For Mission College, we’d have to modify the policy to reference our specific forms and processes. If we agreed upon those, then I would think this could take the form of a recommendation to the Curriculum Committee and then, upon their approval, be forwarded to the Academic Senate. For example:

For a course in which 30% or more of the instructional hours will be delivered in a distance-learning format (online, video, Podcast, etc.), a Distance Education Course Approval Form must be completed. The Distance Education Course Approval Form provides the Curriculum Committee with the information needed to ensure that the quality of the course remains intact via the alternative delivery method. The Curriculum Committee, with the assistance of the DDL Committee reviews the appropriateness of the methods of presentation, assignments, evaluation of student performance and instructional materials. The committee also reviews the information to determine that appropriate contact between the students and instructor will occur.
