Establishing Proficiency for Online Instructors at Los Angeles Harbor College as approved by the LAHC Academic Senate:

All instructors who teach an online distant education course for the first time at Harbor College must establish proficiency by:

(1)    Completion of a training course in the college supported CMS, and

(2)    Completion of a training course dealing with the pedagogy of teaching online, or

(3)    The equivalency of one and two above as determined by the instructor’s department chair, in consultation with the D/DL Committee. Note:  A list of equivalencies will be developed by the committee and made available to division chairs.

This policy will not be applied retroactively to instructors who were assigned to teach online classes prior to the date this document was approved by Division Council on 10/1/08.

Evidence to be maintained by Division Chairs as of December, 2008:

(1)    Either the instructor’s ETUDES user id or a copy of their certificate of completion from ETUDES.

(2)    Certificate, transcripts or letter from the organization that offered the course that the instructor completed a training course dealing with the pedagogy of teaching online.

•    These might include @one, DeAnza CC, LASC, WLAC, LATTC or other colleges.

(3)    The equivalency of (2) above as determined by the instructor’s department chair, in consultation with the D/DL Committee. Note:  A list of equivalencies will be developed and maintained by the LAHC D/L committee and made available to division chairs.
