Minutes

The meeting started at 8:15 am

1. hybrid classes - 51 % is distance learnng class. - Paul said COC suggests if 30 percent online then under purview of DE. The Committee discussed this and decided that if a substantial portion is online, e.g. 30%, then the class should be identified as a hybrid class. An updated definition of "hybrid" classes will be drafted and submitted to the Committee for approval.

2. End of Course Survey and Evaluation - Paul will xerox and distribute materials to the committee on "guidelines" to evaluate online classes. We will look at the LACCD District form, and look into the survey software adopted recently by LAMC for use in the student evaluation survey. Here is the current form used by Foothill by students to evaluate their online instructors - http://profj.us/ddl/forms/studentsurvey.htm

3. Assessment of Student Readiness - We will ask Juan to put up a link on "Are you ready for online classes" under the online classes link at LAMC. The Committee discussed this ans suffested that we we should have a workhop, possibly 4 one hour workshops for students on onlne classes. Vilma will check into this and get back to us. She will check with student services.

4. Interaction with students - David told the Committee that under the DE Guidelines of the Chancellor's office that regular contact is required between student and online instructor - see http://lamc-ddl.pbwiki.com/contact . Richard will work on developing a checklist for our Department Chairs on what constitutes a good online class. We probably need to announce this at Council of Instruction, and also have training workshops for the Dept. Chairs. David and Said should work on a "rubric" for use by Curriculum and DE to assure the quality of online classes.

5. Etudes NG Training - David told the Committee that the next Etudes NG training will be in October and that he and Juan Chacon will co-teach the class the same as the successful August Etudes NG Workshop.

6. Name of the Committee . The Committee discussed the name of the committee, and decided that the name DDL - Distributive and Distance Learning is somewhat confusing and not as self-descriptive as the "Distance Education Committee" . The Committee voted to change the name to the "DE" or "Distance Education Committee".

7. Our next meeting is on Friday, October 13th at 8:15 am

the dial in number is 1-866-316-1517.

The meetng adjourned at 9:15 am
