Best Practices
1.1 Office Hours - Syllabus should include a specific date and time in office hours and method of contact. Email, skype, livechat, etc. are acceptable forms.
1.2 Official Course Description - check the college catalog, and also should be near the top of the syllabus for easy access and reference by students.
1.3 Discussion Forums - Should be good topics for discussion, and provide a grading rubric. (see sample). Best practice requires students to respond to 2 other students' postings. Also to ensure interactive class, best practice suggests a discussion forum for each week of class.
1.4 Calendar of work - includes dates, chapters of textbook, assignment dates, quiz dates, etc. - Best practice - calendar on left of page, or in easy location to find.
1.5 Study required each week - It is a Best Practice to include time required to study in on campus/online classes each week. See general rules.
1.6. Balance in Point Distribution - Grades should be assigned in substantial points for assignments, quizzes first, and then lesser points for class participation
1.7 Grading Rubrics - Best Practices suggests that instructor provide a rubric for grading of assignments, class projects etc. Good rubrics are found at http://www.rcampus.com/indexrubric.cfm or http://rubistar.4teachers.org/
1.8. Break down of work - Best practices suggest that classwork be broken down into quizzes/tests, assignments and discussion forums.
